Nikolaus and Elizabeth Schommer lived with their daughter, Elizabeth Evers and her family in Kenosha, Wisconsin for almost thirty years. On March 26, 1883, Nikolaus and Elizabeth and William and Elizabeth Evers and their family moved to Hassan Township, Hennepin County, Minnesota.

John and Catherine Behn Schommer changed the spelling of their last name to Schomer with one m. However, their name is spelled both ways on many documents. John died when a tree fell on him and broke his back while he was logging with other men. Six of their children died at a very young age and five of these died during a diphtheria epidemic within a month after John's death.
