Introduction
These documents are the result of Schommer family members
who performed genealogic research, and others who kept
their own individual records and photographs and were kind
enough to share them.
The Schommer family documented here originated in the Saar region of Germany. In the middle of the 19th century various family members immigrated to the United States by way of Ellis Island, New York. Most of the Schommers who immigrated were farmers and soon headed west, ending up in Minnesota, Wisconsin, and Saskatchewan, Canada.

The SCHOMMER surname is identified by the U.S. Bureau of the Census as a surname with more than 100 occurrences in the United States for the year-2000 U.S. Census. In "Demographic Aspects of Surnames from Census 2000", the Census Bureau tabulated the surnames of all people who had obtained Social Security Numbers by the year 2000. SCHOMMER ranks at number 13830 in terms of the most common surnames in the United States for 2000. SCHOMMER had 2,005 occurrences in the 2000 Census, according the U.S. government records.
